What’s in our packs
The same core kit is planned for each of our four long-distance hikes. Here’s what we’ve chosen so far, what it weighs, and why.
This is a work in progress, not a complete pack list. We’re not publishing base weights yet: several item weights and packed-versus-worn details still need confirming.
When we publish base weights, they will count packed gear only—not clothing worn on the trail or consumables such as food, water and fuel.
Shelter
- Durston X-Mid 2 Solid — 1,145 g; carried by Will. We wanted a lighter, more spacious tent than our old MSR Hubba Hubba. We chose the solid version for the damp, windy UK climate.
Packs
- Osprey Exos 58 (no lid) — 1,290 g; carried by Will. We tried a lot of packs and found this comfortable day after day at a reasonable weight.
- Osprey Eja 48 — 1,251 g; carried by Beth. We tried a lot of packs and found this comfortable day after day at a reasonable weight.
Sleep system
- Exped Ultra 3R Duo — 845 g; shared. Our current shared sleeping mat. We may switch to two separate mats with joining straps.
- Rab silk liners — ~120 g each; carried by both (one each). We each use one because it is easier to wash than a sleeping bag, and liners are needed in mountain huts.
- Sea to Summit Spark Pro -9 — 619 g; carried by Will. Our sleeping bags zip together and are warm enough for frosty nights.
- Sea to Summit Flame 3 — 665 g; carried by Beth. Our sleeping bags zip together and are warm enough for frosty nights.
- Exped Pillow Ultra — 50 g; carried by Will
- Sea to Summit Aeros pillow — 99 g; carried by Beth
Cooking
- Fire Maple FMC-XK6 aluminium pot — 190 g; shared. The heat exchanger helps save gas and boiling time, and the pot has room for two portions of food.
- MSR PocketRocket stove — 73 g; shared. Our first proper lightweight stove. We may upgrade it.
- Screw-top gas canister — 230 g fuel capacity; shared. We use this size because it fits neatly inside the pot. Fuel is a consumable and is excluded from base weight.
